Twitter 表示將不再允許第三方開發者創建客戶端，規定開發者不能使用 Twitter 的 API 或內容「來創建或試圖創建 Twitter 應用程式的替代或類似服務及產品」，如Tweetbot、Twitterrific、Aviary、Echofon、Birdie等，並明確表示第三方 Twitter 應用程式目前不會出現。

早前，Twitter Dev發佈一則帖文表示自己正在執行「存在已久的規則」，而這「可能導致一些 app 無法使用」，但就沒有進一步解釋規則。外媒 The Information 就猜測，封禁第三方客戶端是因為廣告問題，有些第三方客戶端應用程式不會顯示廣告，令Twitter的廣告收入大幅降低。

Twitterrific 和 Tweetbot 的開發者則表示，自己「一直遵守Twitter的API規則」，對Twitter 這項舉動感到一頭霧水。
